Care Instructions Q & A

What are care instructions?

Care instructions are simply the guidelines Dr. Buchsieb gives you for taking good care of your oral health and your appliances, such as a retainer or Invisalign® aligners. How you care for your dental health before, during, and after your orthodontic treatment can influence your treatment outcome, lower your risks of complications, and improve your oral health.

After your treatment with braces, you’ll need to wear a retainer and carefully follow the instructions given to you by Dr. Buchsieb to take care of your gums, teeth, and mouth.

How can I care for my dental health during Invisalign® treatment?

Dr. Buchsieb provides you with detailed care instructions to help you take care of your dental health before, during, and after your Invisalign® orthodontic treatment.

With every orthodontic treatment, you should be sure you keep the area where your teeth meet your gums clean. With Invisalign® aligners, you simply remove your aligners for cleaning.

Floss daily and brush your teeth twice a day, and don’t forget to clean your tongue where bacteria reside using a toothbrush or a tongue scraper.

Once your aligners come out, you might need to wear a removable retainer for some time. Make sure you always place your Invisalign® aligners or your retainer in a safe storage case.

What should I do if I have a problem with my braces?

Smile With Style Orthodontics is here to help in a braces emergency. Braces are delicate and must be taken care of to prevent damage. Even if you’re following your braces care instructions, sometimes your braces might get damaged.

At the Smile With Style Orthodontics front desk, emergency orthodontic kits are available for purchase that includes pliers, floss and floss threader, and orthodontic wax.

Loose band or bracket

If you have a loose bracket or band on your braces and it’s still attached to the wire, you should leave it in place. If it’s uncomfortable, you can place wax on it. If it comes out completely, you can wrap the loose bracket or band in tissue and bring it with you to the office.

Loose wire

If a wire tie gets loose and pokes the inside of your mouth, you can gently tuck the wire back into place with a blunt object like a pencil eraser, or you can cover the end with a piece of wax.

Soreness and discomfort

Mild soreness following your orthodontic visit should subside with over-the-counter ibuprofen or acetaminophen. If you have concerns or you’re experiencing soreness and discomfort, visit Smile With Style Orthodontics for an evaluation.

If your appliances are irritating your cheeks, tongue, lips, or gums, try rinsing your mouth with salt water and using wax to cover the appliance. Dr. Buchsieb can help make your orthodontic appliances as comfortable and effective as possible. Call the office or click to schedule an appointment today.
